Field Research on the Urban Characteristics in Qingdao
Field Research on the Urban Characteristics in Qingdao
23.01.2020 | Qingdao has a very different set of morphological conditions than Germany. For the SP TOPOI team having a greater understanding of how the urban systems in Qingdao function is essential. During a trip to Qingdao in January Olaf Mumm and Ryan Zeringue, members of the EAST-Cities team, conducted field research to study urban characteristics unique to Qingdao as well as documenting and catalog how public and private space is used in different neighborhoods throughout the city. Prior to visiting Qingdao for this field research a set of neighborhoods to visit was made that presented a range of different urban morpholgies and functions in order to gain a better understanding of the whole range of spatial usage in the city. Each neighborhood was analyzed on a series of criteria including: functions, street usage, sidewalk condition, and availability of public transit amongst others. Data extracted from this field research will be utilized to adapt the TOPOI method to the Chinese context through a greater understanding of the Qingdao Urban System.
