Positive Urban Production – a building block for sustainable cities

Industrial value creation is an important part of sustainably developing cities, although often associated with negative impacts. Increasingly, sustainable production concepts are being pursued by companies and environmental protection criteria are defined or strengthed by regulators. The EAST-Cities project intensifies its research and development work in this direction and develops solutions for positive impact urban production.

In this context, the international project team could be extended with Prof. Weimin Zhang, Director of the Institute of Advanced Manufacturing Technology of the School of Mechanical Engineering at Tongji University in Shanghai. A successful workshop at Tongji University in January 2020 revealed numerous joint research topics regarding urban production systems and industrial value creation. Subsequently, the members of the German research team participated in a meeting and factory visit at the Sino-German Ecopark in Qingdao. The Ecopark is the key implementation partner of the subproject Production. With the developed research roadmap, the future work packages on urban production will contribute to the overall project success.
